Legal
Assistance provided under the Older American's Act funding may differ
from county to county. Generally speaking, seniors who are unable to manage
their own affairs or changing needs appropriately may need legal assistance.
Legal services provide advice and counsel to older persons and their families
in dealing with financial and business concerns. In more extreme situations,
protective services may be needed. Such services are designed to safeguard
the rights and interests of older persons, to protect them from harm,
and/or protect their property.
Services:
Some legal issues that may interest older persons and their families
are:
- power of attorney
- durable power of
attorney
- guardianship
- conservatorship
- wills
- "right to die"
living wills
- government benefits
and entitlements
- consumer services
- landlord/tenant
problems
- trusts
- living trusts
- pensions
- age discrimination
- family law

needs to be made with the local Area Agency on Aging. The Area Agency
on Aging can be contacted by looking in a local phone book or by calling
the county government office.
Financing:
Financial assistance to access these programs is generally not needed.
