RESPITE CARERespite Care programs are available in several areas throughout Utah. However, there may be locations that do not have the service. The Alzheimer's Association, State Division of Aging and Adult Services, Easter Seals, and the Division of Services for People with Disabilities have regional respite programs. Each program has different guidelines regarding the individuals they will serve. Respite care providers may or may not be specially trained; they can also include volunteers. In broad terms, respite care is to provide intermittent and time limited relief to care givers of adults who are suffering chronic long-term illnesses or conditions where the level of the care giving responsibilities creates extreme stress and other sources of informal relief are not sufficient. In other words, people who spend much of their time caring for people with disabilities can take a "break" or have some temporary relief from caregiving duties. Services:
The services provided depend upon the needs of the families and consumer involved. Contact: For further information, call the Alzheimer's Association, local Area Agency on Aging, Easter Seals Society of Utah or Division of Services for People with Disabilities. All are listed in the local phone book. Financing: State funding is available
for most respite care programs. There may be a fee for service assessed
by the program. However, out of pocket payment is still the most common
payment method. The case manager in the local area can provide information
regarding availability of respite care and the payment options. There
may be a waiting list for service.
