IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

One of the most important financial resources an individual has is the document containing information about them, family members and personal property. Having a list of documents compiled and a personal property inventory maintained will help prevent legal problems when an individual dies or becomes unable to communicate their wishes.man helping an other man walk

These documents may include information about:

  • you
  • your family
  • health and medical history
  • business or other holdings
  • insurance policies
  • personal finances
  • valuables
  • your wishes in the event that you become critically ill, mentally incapacitated, or die.

It is helpful to keep these documents in a central location that is secure from natural disaster or theft. At the same time, it is important to keep copies of these documents in an accessible place. A safe place to keep original documents might be:

  • a fireproof box
  • safety deposit box
  • a location where a family member can find them
  • a place where the documents will be protected

In the resource section of this booklet, you will find a checklist of important documents. The checklist is to help identify what may be needed and where the documents are located
