Health Maintenance Organization

HMO's are the oldest form of managed care plan. They offer members a range of health benefits, including preventative care, for a set monthly fee. There are many kinds of HMO's. The network of providers may operate from:man riding bike

  • a central medical office or clinic
  • private offices

Choice:

The Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan will provide a list of doctors from which to choose a primary care physician. This doctor will coordinate medical care and must approve referrals to specialists and other medical care providers.

Costs:

Some HMO's require a co-payment, like $5 or $10 for various services. Yet, with other HMO's you will pay nothing when you visit the doctor. If the policyholders choose not to use the primary care physician they have selected from the company list then they will be fully responsible for the costs.
